The Other Tribe – We
Should Be
Dancing
2012 saw the
release of three excellent singles from quirky new band, The Other Tribe. The
singles ranged from tribal synth epic Skirts
to mass collaboration Don’t Need No
Melody. We Should Be Dancing is
the first show of hand from the band in 2013 and comes in the form we love them
best. Free!
As the chorus
and title suggest the predominant objective of the song is to get us dancing
yet, unlike the ever popular sound of EDM, the far-removed alternative sound proffered
by the band is so alien to most modern dance music that the reaction is all the
more willing. Not only do they slip across the boundaries of dance-inducing
music but they also don’t fit the usual band music mould. They truly are a
completely new breed of music.
The dominant
feature that immerses you in its folds is the eclectic brew of various hard-hitting
and plucky instruments. In ways, it almost sounds as if the band went crazy in the
kitchen after washing up, bashing madly yet harmoniously on kitchen implements.
However, this in no way conveys to your ears the actual organic temperament of
the track. The song is then completed by steadfast vocals.
The Other
Tribe have the ability to tailor small mundane sounds and turn them into deep
resonating melodic pieces. At the right volume, with a suitably high quality
speaker, their music can turn the foulest mood into a blissful caprice, in
places conjuring the psychedelic atmosphere
of MGMT and the vocal texture of James Blake.
