JLS – Hottest Girl in the World
News that JLS
are releasing another single doesn’t normally shake the walls at RSReviewsUK,
but this song is different. Hottest Girl
in the World appears to take inspiration from Justin Timberlake. If a solo
singer had taken the style we might raise an eyebrow, but a band borrowing and putting
their own spin on it, is completely acceptable, even advisable. The song sounds
especially influenced by Timberlake’s 2009 hit, Like I Love You.
The track is
not without fault – the lyrics, although catchy, are not exactly ground
breaking and the video is a bit simplistic. However, by rejecting their
previous formula, based around a mixture of club tunes and ballads, they have honed
their style into a promising and creditable result.
The
production is what really transports and moulds the song into the classic that it
is guaranteed to become. It is packed with attitude, boasting a barrage of resonating
drums, hugely catchy rhythmical guitar strums, vigorous hand clapping and classy
finger-clicking goodness. We even get to witness some impressive, yet slightly
random, sparks falling to the ground near the end of the video, reminiscent of
their performances on the X-Factor
The group not
only deliver their staple closely harmonized vocals, they hold the falsetto
effortlessly. The question is: can they maintain this vocal finesse during live
performances? Either way, it is an impressive change for the group. Just as
their album title promises, the group have clearly evolved their sound. JLS
have just made boy bands cool again. We just wish they wouldn’t throw their
hats at us - we’re not a coat stand.
