Hadouken! – Bad Signal
Meet Hadouken!, a band formed in 2006 and made up of singer, producer and writer James Smith, synth player Alice Spooner, drummer Nick Rice and guitarists, Daniel Rice and Chris Purcell. The group have already had three top twenty albums/mixtapes and have most recently been signed to the Ministry of Sound. In June 2012, Bad Signal was played for the first time by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. The Bad Signal EP is set for release on the 19th August and includes remixes from the Wideboys, the Prototypes and Xilent.
Hadouken! were originally a very grindie, rave band but have now modified their sound to give birth to a heavier DnB amplification of their previous electronic production. The song uses silky female vocals, epic male vocals, rapid raps and is backed up by a volcanic dose of drum ‘n’ bass. The song is also accompanied by very cyber-inspired lyrics. The raps are tight, spitting lyrics like: “…my timeline up pops your face. No, no notification babe, but I know it's still the text you erased. Cause in my mind you are trending. In a way that my heart is still pending. See they're on my newsfeed”.
Bad Signal has a video that perfectly represents its cross genre identity through the use of its double storyline. One is the wandering girl, lost in the turmoil and loneliness of her life that then collaborates with the second storyline, which incorporates scenes of the band doing a gig with views of the wild crowd. The two then combine at the end of the video, representing the fusion of the genres found in the song. The video helps fuel the grungy synths and mixed vocals, while also delivering an almost live experience.
The production, done by up and coming producer, Aeph, is a massive step forward for the band. Hadouken! have previously worked with Noisia but the more liberal application of drum ‘n’ bass provided by Aeph fits even better with the their style. This creates a song that will appeal to fans of bass culture, rave, grind, hip hop and all of the surrounding genres. Bad Signal combines its various components into an awesome fusion of genres and styles.

  1. Is it necessary to put the exclamation point when writing the artist name? lol. Anyway I believe this review went helpful for me on the fact that I more understand now the concept of its video and unique musicality through your own thoughts. Very brilliant. PS: Loving this right now as well, probably the best recent dubstep track for me.
