Example – Say Nothing
Example is a
British singer and rapper who has had two number one singles and a number one
album in the UK. The fourth album is set for release in November and Say Nothing, which was premiered today
on Capital FM is the first single taken from it. The singer has also recently
been shooting the music video for the upcoming single.
The singer has
already stated that the new album and single will have a different feel to his
previous albums. It will still include electronic production but will also contain
guitar riffs to create a more light rock feel. On the album Example has
worked with previous collaborators such as Laidback Luke, Feed Me and
Funkagenda and will also collaborate with Diplo and Alesso to name just a few.
Say Nothing is at the forefront of this evolution
that Example is going through and delivers his characteristic vocals with his
lyrically genius lines. The new guitar sounds are applied in an epic fashion,
smashing through with a mixture of uplifting notes and deep three dimensional echoes
of perfection.
This brilliant
production is led by Dirty South and is headlined by a mixture of guitar riffs
and more subtle echoing strums. These guitar sounds are then given a fine
varnishing of smooth electronic notes to conjure a mind fizzling combination.
The production overall would almost be comfortable in the soundtrack of a film,
with its epic, climatic and far reaching qualities. Example is also known for creating
great energy in his live performances and this new material will be great for
his live sets, especially with his touring band.
The lyrics
used by Example have been infused with an extra dose of meaningful content to
create an emotional yet highly charged hum of life, while still pulling through
with the usual catchy and clever lyrics. Even the “ooooowoooh” lines sound
unique due to the difference in production. He does not follow the endless
number of pop artists using the device, but instead forges his own unique path
via the line's flexible nature. This cry of “oooowoooh” is one of the most
justified and original uses yet and Example should be commended for this purity
and much needed development of the over used lyric.
Other lyrics
like “Twice strikes the lightning”, “You don’t need to say nothing cos your
eyes do the talking” and “We used to have our eggs sunny side up, but the fun
dried up” are just typical of his meaningful, catchy and brilliant style and
ability. The interluding rap is a great ambassador to show off his lyrical
abilities and as per usual carries clever metaphors and golden lines. His
vocals are also melded into the production as if they are self-tailored.
This leads to
the certain niche style that Example has created that means he never sounds
formulaic or unoriginal. This is despite him listening to the latest Kasabian
album for inspiration during recording of his album, a practice some artists
might find would influence their own music too much. By changing sound between
albums Example makes sure he never repeats his previous material and creates
refreshing credible pop music that seems to improve from album to album.
Some fans may
miss his distinctly electronic music from Playing
in the Shadows but this fresh new slant on his previous styles is so
faultless that hopefully existing fans will retain their love for his music and
many new fans will be gained in the process. The new evolved sound of Example
carries a new air of professional certainty and contains such a vast array of
ingredients that the resulting potion is one of Example’s best songs to date.
