Fazer - Killer

Richard Rawson, known as Fazer is one third of hip-hop group, N-Dubz. The group have had top twenty hits including I Need You, Dance Again and Playing with Fire as well as two platinum selling albums. In 2011 the group decided to work on their own solo projects and since, both Tulisa and Dappy have had a number 1 single in the UK.

Now Fazer steps forward with his beast of a track, Killer, which was premiered by Mistajam on Radio 1Xtra. The production is like the name of the song would suggest, insane, wild and fierce, and goes way beyond Fazer’s productions for the N-Dubz material in the past. Killer crosses multiple genres with its electronic, dubstep, club, style that is ruthless and unrestrained, yet perfectly executed. The inclusion of clapping on the build-up, help increase the epic feeling to the song.

Rawson has surprisingly not used a featuring vocalist for the chorus with himself simply rapping, but has in fact provided the chorus as well. The use of autotune has been criticised by some fans but overall the vocal adjustment works too well to receive any major criticism. It is a clever choice by the producer/rapper to use his own vocals with autotune, as it combines well with this type of genre and gains him full credit for the single’s success.

Not only does it use the rap/vocals of Fazer but the song also contains a huge instrumental passage of destruction that strongly represents the chaotic feud in the Killer’s head. The song, through its beats and vocals combined, is thoroughly rhythmical and addictive and uses its transformational, multi-layer format along with its lyrics to ensure that it will make people around the world keep the song on repeat for a long time.

The mysterious and intense video is extremely suitable, effectively playing on the gender stereotypes set up through the lyrics. It might not be for the faint hearted but its swift, manic style is perfect and director, JaK FrSH and producer, Tom King, have done an expert job.

Killer is a surprise in terms of genre choice for Fazer, but there is no doubt that the production is of unbelievably high quality and is an impressive display of true talent from the producer. The tune is a staggering collision of multiple genres, bringing together the more underground genres with more commercial genres to create a perfect fusion of music. Killer along with the recent chart success of dubstep and its co genres represents the increasing justified appreciation of this expansive type of music.
